Insuring Your Holiday Travels
Are you planning to travel over the holidays? Maybe visiting family you haven’t seen in a while, or perhaps heading off to a warmer climate for a bit? Whatever your reason, one thing remains the same—traveling is pricey. Between the costs of airfare, a hotel room, the activities at your destination and the little things in between, you may find yourself dropping thousands on one trip. What would happen if something comes up that prevents you from traveling, but you’ve already purchased prepaid packages?
That’s why travel insurance is such an important consideration, especially when planning an expensive trip or a trip to a remote area. Some other reasons to consider travel insurance include:
- Traveling to areas with an increased risk of illness
- Traveling with expensive belongings or business documents in your luggage
- Traveling to participate in extreme sports or activities
- Traveling to countries with an unstable political climate
However, not all trips pose risks. For instance, staying with your grandmother may be inexpensive enough to pass on coverage, but you may want it if you’re traveling overseas or are planning to purchase a non-refundable vacation package. When thinking about whether or not you need travel insurance, consider what it covers vs. what you’ll be doing while traveling.
- Travel cancellation/interruption: If severe weather, illness, bereavement or unexpected damage to your home force you to cancel or terminate your trip early, travel insurance can reimburse you for travel expenses.
- Luggage issues: If your luggage is lost, stolen, damaged or delayed in transit, travel insurance can reimburse you for associated costs.
- Emergency medical care: While your health insurance may cover some expenses during your trip, travel insurance can provide you with extra coverage to make up for those limitations.
Travel insurance is sold either per trip or on annual basis, depending on how often you travel. You can also select domestic coverage, international coverage or coverage based on specific locations. Talk to your independent insurance agent today about your coverage needs.
